Morning and evening , Poet Stevens , who also worked at an insurance company (保险公司) , walked a mile or so between his house and his office . Even in bad weather he would seldom accept a ride . There was a purpose ; he thought out poems as he walked . Shaking slightly from side to side as he dragged forward in a clumsy way (笨拙的) , the poet was as obviously engaged in putting one sentence of the poem in front of the others as he was in putting one foot in front of the other .
Writer Brenden Gill recalls that his sister saw Stevens going by her house . As she watched , the poet slowed down , came to a stop , shook in place for a moment or two , took a step backward , hesitated , and then made big steps confidently forward on his way . It seemed as if he had gone back over a phrase , dropped an unsatisfactory word , filled a better one , and came to the next line of his poem .
