Karen Mok (Mo Wenwei) couldn't hold back her smile this week when her album, “X”(Sony), was announced as having sold over 500,000 copies.
“I'm so happy that people like my new adventure,” the 33yearold Hong Kongbased singer said on Monday. “I am a gift for all my dear fans, and a gift for myself as well.”
Mok called the album “X”, meaning the Roman numeral 10, to mark her 10th anniversary in the music business, she said.
“X” has been a total surprise for Mok's fans. Unlike her past nine releases, “X” includes more than just love songs. Everything from heavy metal or rap, to soul and blues gets a look in on it. “I never repeat myself and I never hesitate to try out new things,” she said, a cheeky smile spreading across her face. “I feel that I was born to surprise. It's just part of my character.”
One of the biggest of the surprises on the album is how easily she takes songs written by others — Jay Chou, Nicholas Tas, and David Tao — and makes them her own.
Those songs didn't trun out to sound like a female Jay or female David. They were written out of their feelings for me, without a stamp of their individual style.
Multitalented and multifaceted, intelligent and full of sex appeal — all these things have helped Mok make the leap from pop wannable to superstar.
Her songs, which cover topics such as love, relationship, and female independence, have struck a cord with the public, in Hong Kong and on the mainland.
She has also captured attention as an actress, starring in many of director Wong Kar Wai's films, and appearing in Stephen Chow Xingchi's comedies.
Mok and Chow have been romantically linked for years.
But what makes Mok special is that she has stood out as an alternative to other, alltoofamiliar Cantopop stars.
She has always played with her special image, while beginning shy and philosophical in public.
It's in film that she has been most daring(大胆的), though, playing an ugly woman in Chow's “God of Cookery”.
“A lot of actresses wouldn't risk such roles because they think they always have to appear pretty. I thought, ‘what the heck, it's only a movie’,” she said, laughing.
59.One of the biggest surprises on the album is __________________.
A.how easily Mok had written her new songs
B.how easily Mok had her new songs written by Jay Chou, Nicholas Tas and David Tao
C.how easily Jay Chou, Nicholas Tas and David Tao wrote the new songs for Mok
D.how easily Mok got the point of the songs written by Jay Chou, Nicholas Tas and David Tao and expressed them in her style
60.What does “X” stand for in Mok's new album?
A“X” means something mysterious.
B“X” means the love songs in her new album.
C“X” marks her 10th year in music business.
D“X”, the Roman numeral 10, means the new album contains 10 songs.
61.Which of the following is NOT the reason why Mok is successful as a pop star?
AMok is a gracefullooking woman.
BShe is alternative to other popular stars.
CShe always tries out new things.
DShe is multitalented and multifaceted, intelligent and full of sex appeal.
62.Which do you think is a suitable title for this passage?
AA Mew Star, Karen Mok.
BKaren and Her “X”.
CNever Hesitate to Try Out New Things.
DDo You Like Her New Album?

It was early morning. Peter Corbett helped Mark Wellman out of his wheelchair and onto the ground. They stood before El Capitan, a huge mass of rock almost threequarters of a mile high in California's beautiful Yosemite Valley. It had been Mark's dream to climb E1 Capitan for as long as he could remember. But now could a person without the use of his legs hope to try to climb it?
Mark knew he couldn't finish the climb alone, but his friend Peter, an expert rock climber, would be there to lend a helping hand. He and Mark thought that it would take seven days to reach the top.
Peter climbed about 100 feet up and hammered a piton(岩钉) into the rock. Fastening one end of a 165foot rope to the piton, he let one end of the rope fall down. Mark caught the rope and fastened it to his belt with a special instrument. This instrument would allow Mark to move upward, but would prevent him from falling even as much as a single inch. He next reached above his head and fastened a Tshaped bar to the rope, using the same kind of instrument.
Mark took a deep breath, pushed the Tbar up almost as far as his arms could reach, and began the first of the 7,000 pullups needed to reach the top. High above, Peter let out a cheer, “You're on your way.”
Seven years before, at the age of twentyone, he had fallen while mountain climbing, injuring his backbone. The fall cost him the use of his legs, but he never lost his love of adventure or his joyful spirit.
For the first four days the two men progressed steadily upward without an incident. But on the fifth day an unbearably hot wind began to blow, and as time went by, it became stronger and stronger, causing Mark to sway violently on his rope. But Mark kept on determinedly pushing up the Tbar and pulling himself up. In spite of that, he had to admit that he felt a lot better when the wind finally died down and his body touched solid rock again.
It took them one day more than they had expected, but on July 26 at 1:45 in the afternoon, the crowd of people waiting on the top went wild with joy as the two heads appeared. Mark Wellman had shown that if you set your heart and mind on a goal, no wall is too high, no dream impossible.
63.What had Mark Wellman long desired to do?
ATo finish one of the most difficult rock climbs in the world.
BTo be the first to climb E1 Capitan.
CTo climb the highest mountain in California.
DTo help his friend Peter climb E1 Capitan.
64.How did Mark lose the use of his legs?
AHe lost his footing and fell from the side of a mountain.
BHe fell during his first attempt on E1 Capitan.
CHis legs were broken by falling rocks.
DWhile working out in the gym, he injured his backbone.
65.What was the worst problem Mark had during the climb?
AHe struck against the rock and hurt his amrs.
BA strong wind blew him away from the rock.
CHe kept falling several inches.
DWhile swaying in space, he became terrified.
66.How did Mark react to difficulties during the climb?
AHe admitted that he was frightened.
BHe often worried about his friend's condition.
CHe was able to remain calm and determined.
DHe nearly give up.

Space travel is definitely bad for astronauts' bones, reducing their bone density(密度) after only a month of weightlessness, according to French research published on Friday.
Laurence Vico and his fellow workers at St Etienne University called for more research into the effects of micro gravity(重力), after their study of 15 astronauts from the Russian MIR station showed bone loss continued throughout space flights.
“Bone loss was especially striking in four astronauts.” the scientists reported in the Lancet Medical Journal.
They measured the bone mineral density(BMD) of bones in the forearm and lower leg of the astronauts who had spent one to six months in space.
The BMD loss was significant in the tibia of the lower leg, a weightbearing bone, but barely changed in the radius(桡骨) of the forearm. “Our results indicate the need to investigate not only different bones, but also different areas of the same bone since not all sites of the skeleton(骨架)are similarly affected by space conditions,” they added.
Without gravity the body isn't bearing any weight so there is no need for calcium(钙), which makes bones strong, and it becomes empty intothe bloodstream.
The research team suggested in future scientists should try to determine if the loss of bone density was only on weightbearing bones on longer flights, also the possible recovery after returning to Earth.
67.French scientists did their research on Russian astronauts, because __________________.
Athey only cared for the Russian astronauts
Bthe were not interested in their own astronauts
Cthe Russian government invited them to do their research
Dthe Russian astronauts worked in space for a long time
68.Scientists have found that __________________.
Athe BMD loss may cause serious illnesses to astronauts
Bthe BMD loss may cause some change in astronauts' bodies
Castronauts shouldn't care about the BMD loss
Dthe Russian astronauts worked in space for a long time
69.What causes the BMD loss to astronauts, according to this passage?
AThe food they eat in space. BThe drinks they take in space.
CThe temperature in space. DThe gravity in space.
70.What does the sentence “Bone loss was especially striking in four astronauts,” probably mean in the text?
ABone loss is a common disease among astronauts.
BBone loss is so obvious among astronauts that it attracts scientists' attention.
CBone loss can only be found in astronauts' body.
DBone loss may bring deadly threat to astronauts' lives.

I hear many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling. I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning how to stand on your own two feet. But take a look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are all taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them are clutching at (attempting to seize) one another's handsfor reassurance.
They claim that they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in musil. But somehow they all end up crowded round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in thusandsuch a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon(蚕茧) — into a lager cocoon.
It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry had firmly carved out a teenager market. These days every teenager can learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of today's parents have come toward high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.
But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don't care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come — with the people who respect you for who you are. That is the only kind of popularity that really counts.
71.The author's purpose of writing this passage is to tell .
Areaders how to be popular with people around
Bteenagers how to decide things for themselves
Cparents how to control and guide their children
Dpeople how to understand and respect each other
72.According to the author, many teenagers think they are brave enough to act on their own, but in fact, most of them __________________.
Ahave much difficulty understanding each other
Black confidence
Cdare not cope with problems singlehanded
Dare very much afraid of getting lost
73.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.There is no popularity that really counts.
B.What many parents are doing is in fact hindering their children from finding their own paths.
C.It is not necessarily bad for a teenager to disagree with his or herclassmates.
D.Most teenagers claim that they want to do what they like to do.
74.The author thinks of advertisements as __________________.
Aconvincing
Binstructive
Ceffective
Dauthoritative
75.During the teenage years, one should learn to __________________
Adiffer from others in as many ways as possible
Bget into the right season and become popular

Today I showed some foreign friends around our city. We started off by car from the Friendship Hotel at 8:10 am. We first went to Zhongshan Park. We were all struck by its beautiful flowers on show. Then, we visited the city museum. We saw plenty of valuable things, from which we learned more about the city. After that we drove to Pengshan Temple. It is a beautiful place of interest in our city, and from there we enjoyed the wonderful scenery of the sea. We had a delicious lunch at the Seafood Restaurant and came back at 1:20 pm. All the foreign friends were pleased with my arrangement. We did have a wonderful time today.
